Innovative Thinking

AMERICAN SYSTEMS Joint/International Concepts (JIC) Directorate has provided outstanding service to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program (JNLWP). The JIC team is well educated and experienced in innovative thinking. Two key areas of innovation include a new way of thinking about engagement domain which incorporates the application of non lethal technologies and patenting of those concepts.

JIC expertise spans:

  • Non-Lethal Force Continuum (Engagement Domain)
  • Patent Pursuit
    • Long Range Acoustic Device
    • Kinetic Energy Transfer/Absorption Material
    • Non-lethal weapons application of materials to reduce coefficient of friction
    • Instrumented Canine Concept, known as the DISMFRC System (Detection, Intelligence, Surveillance, Mapping, Fires, Reconnaissance and Communications).
    • Non-Lethal Laser Array
  • Active Denial System (ADS) management

An example of AMERICAN SYSTEMS’ Innovative Thinking is the concept of using Non-Lethal Engagement to discern the intent of an approaching potential adversary. NLW allows a combatant to determine when and if lethality should be employed without harming innocent bystanders. From a significant distance, an approaching entity can be engaged non-lethally, allowing time for a combatant to make a decision not to kill. The concept, called D-5, includes the following:

  1. Detect
  2. Delay
  3. Deny
  4. Discriminate
  5. Defeat
